Chief Embryologist
Roger Simons

Roger has been employed in the field of reproductive science throughout his working life.

His career began, in Cambridge, working for the Agricultural Research Council's, Unit of Reproductive Physiology and Biochemistry, where he worked alongside a number of eminent scientists some of whom became pioneers in human IVF.
He later worked for a commercial cattle breeding company where he gained a great deal of experience, especially with embryo cryopreservation (freezing).

In 1983 Roger joined the team of Steptoe and Edwards, the IVF pioneers, at Bourn Hall Clinic near Cambridge and was a key member of the group which established the first pregnancy and live birth following the cryopreservation of a human embryo.

He went on to attain the position of Head of the Embryology Laboratory, before leaving in 1989, with Mr Goswamy, to establish the successful fertility unit at the Churchill Clinic, London. During their time there Roger became one of the first HFEA approved ICSI practitioners in the UK, going on to produce successful pregnancies from embryos created by the use of sperm retrieved from frozen/thawed testicular tissue in cases of azoospermia. More recent developments have been the introduction of Assisted Hatching and Blastocyst culture techniques at the Harley Street Fertility Centre.

Roger is one of the founder members of the Association of Clinical Embryologists in the UK and served on their executive committee for three years. He has been a contributor to many scientific papers and has presented data regularly at national and international meetings.
