An important note from the medical director
Mr. Rajat Goswamy MBBS FRCOG

"Recently I have been giving news interviews clarifying some details in press stories regarding fertility clinics
I would like to take this opportunity to further clarify these points and also to post our latest results.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us."

Mr Rajat Goswamy, FRCOG
Medical Director of the Harley Street Fertility Centre, explains:

The way the results are presented in the latest guide 2005/6
is highly confusing and misleading.

By narrowing the age bars, only centres with more than 50 patients in each of these age categories are shown in the bar charts.

Only 17 out of 85 centres have enough patients in each group to feature all 4 bars.
This gives a false impression to clients who may believe that some centres do not treat patients above the age of 35 and others do not treat patients above the age of 38.

The results section seems to have been written by statisticians not in touch with reality.
This will therefore disadvantage many clinics who provide a first class service to smaller numbers of patients.

I wish to emphasise that this guide should be used as a "directory of clinics" and when clients are choosing a clinic they should still ask the four questions listed below.

Patients should telephone any centre they are considering treatment with and ask the following four questions before making any decision.

How many years experience the Doctors and embryologists have in Human IVF and ICSI?
New centres usually only treat patients who are young and who have had no previous attempts elsewhere.

Do they treat patients over 40 yrs of age with donor eggs or the patients ' own eggs?
Many centres will only use donor eggs, so as not to affect their position on the table.

What percentage of their patients have had FSH levels above 12?
Many centres refuse to treat these patients, usually peri-menopausal, as this will compromise their overall results.

What proportion of their patients are NHS patients?
The NHS will only allow "good bet" patients to have treatment, this will falsely boost the results of NHS and Teaching hospital figures.
